Game 4: E-Telecare vs Teleperformance

E-Telecare lost to Teleperformance (25-22, 18-25, 5-25)

I usually express my thoughts better in writing. I would just like to point out a few issues we have with our team. Please find time to read this email and let the whole team know your thoughts on these by replying to EVERYONE. I hope whatever problems/issues that happen inside the court REMAIN INSIDE the court and should not affect how we deal with one another outside the court. On my part, I really don’t care whether we win or lose games as long as we act as a team and play our full potential. So let’s settle our issues…

1. Team Captain / Co-Captain
Just so you would know, the team’s official and registered Team Captain is Irene and I’m the acting Co-Captain. I had to ask Irene to take on this responsibility because I won’t be able to attend most of our games starting this mid-October due to my wedding this November. Irene and I had to designate ourselves as the captain/co-captain because we did not have the time to discuss this matter with the team during the registration. The team has to understand that we do not have a coach and so, during games, the captain should be in charge in making the calls (eg. who plays, who sits down). Irene and I are trying our best to meet the team’s expectations but it becomes hard when each one of us has his/her own opinion that is entirely opposing the other. So we try our best to consider all and settle for a compromise. I also realize that not everyone in the team seems to agree that we should be the captain/co-captain.Just so you would know, the team’s official and registered Team Captain is Irene and I’m the acting Co-Captain. So let’s choose now. Who do you think should be the team’s captain and co-captain that everyone will RESPECT and FOLLOW? (Everyone, please be honest and answer.)

2. Change of Lineup for P3,000
I made a mistake of including Phillip Arriola in the lineup since it turned out that he could not play for the team after all. He is currently being trained to become a Team Leader / TOIC so it’s understandable that he cannot sacrifice his sked for the games. Since we need female players badly to avoid paying P3,000 penalty for each game forfeiture, then as early as now, we can pay for a Change in Lineup (which will cost P3,000 per player change). I have already confirmed this with Club650’s Raine Romero and likewise, Irene said Camille of HR agreed to this as long as we shoulder the cost.I made a mistake of including Phillip Arriola in the lineup since it turned out that he could not play for the team after all. P3,000 / 14 = P215 each. We can take in Irene/Ina’s friend Crystal to fill in the gap. (As for Corky, her sked does not permit her to attend most of the games). What do you think?

3. Issue on Winning Games vs. Playing Time
Obviously, if we focus on winning games, then we cannot expect for everyone to play all the time. On the other hand, if we prioritize on having everyone to have equal playing time every game, then we cannot expect to maximize our team’s potential and win games. Therefore I think I think all of us would agree to balance these 2 things then. There’s really no easy way of developing a system that will work on both. So for now, before and after a game, let’s make it a point to talk about this issue.

Any suggestions?

4. On last Saturday’s game
Last Saturday’s games were a mixture of frustration and achievement for some. Some of us thought we sucked as a team (not because we lost but because we were not able to manage the team’s playing time well). Some people thought we had fluked the first game but was able to adjust well and improved a lot on the second wherein we played against Kampo, a team that is lot lot stronger than Teleperformance.Last Saturday’s games were a mixture of frustration and achievement for some. Jappy – You were one of the “early birds” but was not able to play the entire game 1. You played on game 2 but just barely. So I understand your frustration. In addition, there’s nothing we can do to alter your sked to accomodate the games, sorry. I would also have to say that I do not agree at all on your suggestion of having a “first six” then a “second six” playing alternately to have equal playing time. I understand that some of us play well together with certain players but if we are truly a team, then I think we should develop and find a way for all of us to play together as one team. Not two teams in one team. Also, on team practices, I think the team will be willing to have training somewhere at the Makati area. Please take the initiative to organize this then let us know!!!

Alliver – At first impression, I voted against you but good thing Irene insisted for you to be part of the team. I was entirely wrong about you. Not only do you have the skills but more importantly, the right winning attitude and team spirit. I made a bad call taking you out of game 1’s second set. I thought I could have made a difference by replacing you. But we lost that set. I should have let you played that whole set.

Arky – During game 1’s first set, I decided to use Ernest since, although most of us came in late (myself included), you did not have enough time to even do proper stretching. Hope that’s understandable. During game 2, I thought you acknowledged that your game was off and that’s why you signaled me to have you replaced. I did not know you wanted to play again. Next time, please tell us right then and there (the way Jappy does) instead of texting me after the game. I was the one who insisted you become the team’s primary setter eventhough others preferred Cesar and Ernest. I really feel bad I was not able to give you another chance. Another bad call on my part.

Ernest – Everyone has to know this. We included him in the lineup not knowing he initially did not want to be part of the team (for reasons we really could not understand). Since we did not want to pay the penalty for a change in lineup, we talked to him and convinced him to play. On last Saturday’s game, I think it was obvious that he played well and had less errors compared to most of us. We won game 1’s first set because of him. Ernest, now you know that the team needs you so this should encourage you to attend all the games from hereon.

Lucky – The missing link!!! Volleyball is simple. You receive, set, then go for the kill. Because of your impressive defensive skills, we played a lot better on the second game (in my opinion) considering that Kampo was obviously one of the strong teams. (Their players were former NCAA stars.) Can you PLEEEZ be the team’s official Libero? I would personally be more encouraged to play our games if I know I have your support as the team’s main defensive line. Please?

Irene / Ina – Having a female player to set for the team is always an advantage in this co-ed tournament. Both of you are good setters and defenders as well. Maybe we can try having Ina set then Irene defending. Or viceversa.

Sonny – You’re a flexible Open Spiker and Middle Blocker. Whenever Alliver’s not around, I think you should be the Seventh Man who subs for one of our Open spikers. You also start strong but seem to get exhausted fast. That’s why you and Ivan complement each other (you’ll see why). As for your suggestion to get a coach, I totally agree we need one but unfortunately we cannot afford to pay P500 per session. I am also trying to get my former high school coach, but he may be already playing for one of the teams in the tourney. With or without a coach, we have to make the most of what we have.

Ivan – You seem to play better and commit less errors whenever you come in during the latter part of the game. This makes sense because whenever a player sits for a while, when he gets a chance to play, he would wanna pound the ball as hard as he can like there’s no tomorrow. That’s why you complement Sonny. Whenever he gets tired, you’re the perfect sub to get things going. On last Saturday’s game, you’re our best blocker because every time you block, it was always a check-ball. Just make sure you avoid the net.

Melvin – As Irene pointed out, you encourage others not to give up but your game face and gestures show the opposite. Don’t know what’s really inside your heart. You seem to be disappointed last Saturday. Don’t know if it’s with me, the team, or because you were sick.

Raj – Since he has the highest salary among us, then Raj will treat the whole team to a party or dinner whenever we win games in 3 sets!!! We need your blocking skills.

Cesar – Sorry you were not able to play on game

Lisa – We miss you!!!

Marc – As for me, I wanted to turn back time and go back to the ending part of game 2’s second set. We should have already won that set if I did not choke and commit 2 consecutive errors. I really don’t know why I chose to drop the ball when I should have spiked it hard. For those who felt that I made a lot of bad calls as to who plays and who sits down, I could have not done it any other way. I really feel bad that things did not work as expected. Honestly, I really do not want to be team captain/co-captain because it greatly affects my game. I find it difficult to determine how to meet individual expectations and at the same time try to win games as a team.

I hope we can talk about these issues and find a way to settle them before we move on to our next game.
